Greeters can make a big first impression on guests, and they open the door (sometimes quite literally) for creative expression at events. From elephants to adorable children—and stilt walkers dressed like cherry trees—here's a look at some greeters that made for an enticing event entrance.

Chef's Playground

Chef's Playground
The first-time event at the Art Institute of Chicago May 16 raised money for local public charter school the Academy of Global Citizenship, and students from the school were on hand to greet guests, give them directions, and remind them of the evening's cause—all while (apparently) tugging on donors' heartstrings. Though the event was relatively small, guests bid high all evening, raising more than $1 million.

Big-budget birthday parties around the world spare no expense when it comes to glittering decor, guest activities and comfort, and high-end food and drink. Here's a look at ideas from spectacular birthday bashes that you can steal for your next event.

To celebrate a 70th birthday, a couple chose a Casablanca theme in an homage to their favorite movie. The front yard was turned into a Moroccan lounge decorated with seating groups, pillows, tables, glass lamps, and hookah pipes evocative of the North African locale.

Guests gambled at a roulette table and noshed on tray-passed Moroccan-influenced hors d’oeuvres such as mini crab cakes with harissa remoulade, smoked salmon on potato pancakes with cardamom crème fraiche, lamb meatballs with tomato and minted yogurt dipping sauce, and spanakopita. A quartet played vintage ‘40s tunes.

Samantha Sackler and Tammy Morgan Ratner's new social event production firm Social (a division of Samantha Sackler Productions) produced a destination 50th birthday party in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, that treated guests to a weekend filled with events. The festivities kicked off with a welcome dinner on the beach featuring a live-action taco bar, a piñata hung from a truss structure, live entertainment, and s’mores over a fire pit. The weekend included activities like poolside cocktails and beachside volleyball tournaments. It was all capped off with a dinner at one long table overlooking the ocean.

The Los Angeles event for 200 took its inspiration from the theme “Let’s Relish Life,” a theme announced on the event’s printed materials. The entire party was black and white with silver and crystal accents.

We offer newly married couples a variety of fireworks and special effects options to help celebrate their very special day.

Choose from a full range of indoor pyrotechnic effects for the couple walk-in, cake cutting ceremony and photo taking. Sparkler fountains upon entry, fountains on the cake table and on the dance floor are also available.

We also have dry ice fog machines, confetti and streamer machines. We also have rose petal and glitter balloon machines!

Some couples prefer an outdoor show. This may simply involve some fountains for the driveway or a signage for the couple made out of fireworks.

Imagine transferring the power of an outdoor fireworks production indoors. These devices are non-toxic,
and are nearly odourless and omit very little smoke.

For outdoor weddings, opt for a rainbow of fireworks or kickstart the party with an explosion of colours.
These displays include a variety of shells and high-intensity multi-shot devices that are guaranteed to leave your guests in awe.

No need to tart up fruit; berries and currants are already irresistible when displayed, farm stand-style. Attach escort cards like these and stand them in the baskets. The finished product does double duty as an amuse-bouche that leads guests to tables.

Outdoor weddings are especially beautiful, but they can also be uncomfortably steamy. To keep your guests from overheating, pass out handmade fans -- trust us, they'll be grateful. Feature here is a floral motif on one side and a quote from Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" on the other: "My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep." Printing can be done at your local printers too.

Paper parasols in a warm, sunny palette were set out for guests to shield themselves from the hot sun.

Nights can have quite a chill, so set out a basket of pashmina shawls to guard the female guests' shoulders at this reception.

Large pitchers of pink lemonade match the palette and quench everyone's thirst in the hot weather.

Marc Jacobs

The Marc Jacobs show, delayed by four days due to sample delivery issues, came with a strict mandate this season: no flash photography allowed until the finale. Guests arriving at the 69th Regiment Armory were greeted by a massive indoor "sun" installed in the circular runway space, designed with Stefan Beckman and a reference to artist Ólafur Elíasson's weather project (a 2003 installation at the Tate Modern in London), that cast a monochromatic sepia light throughout the venue. As the models emerged for their second walk leading up to the finale, the light turned white, showcasing the collection's true colors and attention to detail.

Syzygy Events International took inspiration from Jason Wu's black and white spring 2013 show and the checkered pattern of Louis Vuitton when it came to designing this year's stage and runway. Three rows of Edison lights flanked the checkered wall in an homage to the glitz of the Grammys stage. The team created a circular runway with models stopping at every quarter mark as they made their way around to pose for photographers and supporters at the dinner tables.
