What makes a company event special? The food, the people, the ambiance, the entertainment. So many elements to play with. Let's talk about the entertainment!

When you walk into a party, the decor and the activity of people is what you see and this influences the way you feel. The more excited people are, the more excited you automatically feel.

How do we get guests excited and involved? Have activities that guests can take part in. Have entertainers greet the guests as they walk in be it mime artists, fire eaters or even palm readers. This is especially great for themed parties. Have an area where the guests get to mingle with the entertainers and have photos taken instantly.

Here are our top 5 picks for year end party entertainment this year:

Circus Acts and Acrobats

Who can be bored with the many unique acts? Book a stilt walker to make a big announcement for your company at an annual conference or meeting. It is a fun and guaranteed way to get everyone's attention. Booking a cirque act is a great idea when the event needs something remarkable or to get a buzz going. Make sure you can accommodate for the space some of the cirque acts require.

Celebrity Impersonator & Comedy shows

Hire a celebrity impersonator to come to the event and sign autographs and take pictures with guests. You can even hire comedians to set a light mood for the evening.

Graffiti Artist

A graffiti artist that can create a painting of someone or something with a large crowd watching. Some artists do this type of thing super fast, making it intriguing to watch.

Singing Waiters

Singing waiters is a surprise act featuring three talented and charming singers posing as real waiters before taking the guests through a highly amusing, yet sophisticated show.

Subtly, the performers infiltrate the function as members of the ‘real’ service staff. However, not all is what it seems. To the surprise of the guests, an unexpected story unfolds, culminating in a dynamic performance a la “The Three Tenors”.

Sand Artist

When a sand artist performs for an audience, a video camera would be fixed above the table to capture the process, to be projected onto a screen.

The animation is synchronised with the background music's rhythm and music.
The art itself is environmentally friendly. No art paper is wasted and no chemicals are used.

Our top 5 Event Entertainment picks

We organized our first Annual Dinner for the second half of the year two weeks ago and was it fun! Themed "Pajama Party" our client's staff walked in wearing sexy nighwear to two-piece jammies complete with bedroom slippers!

The waiting lounge was decorated with colourful lit structures, a backdrop which looked like a bed and even a bedroom set. The ballroom had plenty of helium balloons and mood lighting.

What made the event successful was not only the decor, or the entertainment, or even the hot emcee but really the attitude of the staff. They were ready to party and they were dressed for it! Their energy filled the air and everything just fell into place.

With companies starting to plan for their year end parties, we thought we'd give a little input on some trends to look out for and some of our fave venues.

Everything Is Illuminated

This season, swanky product launches, retail openings and VIP affairs all have one thing in common: illumination. We're not talking light bulbs, of course, but more of table lamps as centrepieces to color-saturated LED lighting. LED lighting They produce an enormous range of color while using almost no electricity.

Also, think glowing columns, changing mood lighting. Extra cool is that these lights can be pre-set to change colors, or changed by remote control. Event decorators are using them as is or dressed up with sheer fabrics for an exciting palette of otherworldly, gorgeous effects. When combined with equally color-satured lighting throughout the room, and maybe even a matching gobo on the ceiling or dance floor, the effect is truly spectacular.

The effect lighting has on a room, when done properly, pulls you into the space.

You, emotionally, are drawn into a space that you may have seen a hundred times before; but never in a way that you are seeing it now.

Spankin' New Spandex

Oddly, another '70s refuge is back in vogue: spandex.

During the intervening decades, some as-yet-unheralded designer figured out that when stretched over metal frames, Spandex allows light to shine through, casting an uber-cool color-rich glow. Event furniture companies are now offering illuminated Spandex lines of bars, highboys, cocktail tables and cubes. Generally, they're made of metal frames with acrylic or glass tops.

Ice is Nice

Yes, we know you're thinking those ice sculptured swans and hearts but ice sculptures have evolved! Not just for igloos anymore, massive blocks of ice are now being used to make beverage bars. They can even come with laser etched logos specific to your event.

We're also seeing ice used to create "ice luges," artistically sculpted blocks that have channels inside liquid can flow through. An attendant takes a bottle of say, white wine, pours it into the top of the luge. The wine flows down the channel, getting chilled en route, and into your cup, waiting at the bottom. Relatively new to the event scene, luges always seem to be surrounded by excited crowds, not unlike the earliest days of the now-ubiquitous (but still worshipped) chocolate fountain.

Balloons

Some of us grimace when thinking of balloons being used for adult parties but at a recent gala for the New Museum of Contemporary Art, an artist was commissioned to a design a pod of enormous, vibrant balloon sculptures of animals and sea creatures, which hung from the ceiling. And when famed clothing designer/ groovy girl Betsey Johnson held a fragrance launch in her home for a gaggle of newspaper and magazine beauty editors, her ceiling, too, was dotted with dozens of hot pink round balloons.

Edible Centrepieces

A high-end event decor firm in Florida is getting rave reviews from its centerpieces made mostly of vegetables, which use flowers only as minor accents! Think clusters of exotic-palette, texture-heavy artichokes, grapes, eggplants.

For non-vege lovers, you can opt for other food stuff, of course!

We organized KL's first Bag Party last weekend at Farah Bill's Boutique Cafe at TTDI Plaza and despite the luke warm response, we had fun.

Guests received doorgifts packed in a bag shaped carrier and mingled while admiring the latest collection from Vanilla KL.

Bag swapping didn't take place, unfortunately, as only one guest had the bravery to swap her bag!

We played a few games and got to know each other better over yummy set meals specially created by the cafe.

For bag lovers who feel that you'd like us to organize a private bag swapping party, you know how to reach us!

The Big Bag Swap Party

My bag for your bag? The big bag trade in for those bored of their designer bags and craving for something relatively new without having to ...

Big flowers are always going to be in style, but now designers like Carolina Herrera (left) and Lazaro (right) have created beautiful wedding gowns dazzled with intricate little flowers that make their own big statement. Herrera’s ivory gown also includes tulle, which is another big trend. Lazaro’s matching chapel veil is the perfect piece for all you brides who need a veil for your silk organza A-line. Bring spring to life with little flowers on your wedding dress in 2010.

Stand out in remarkable bold prints like the ones on these dresses by designers Reem Acra (left) and Carolina Herrera (right). Whether it be in a floral print of ivory and black roses or a golden work of art, dare to be the bride of the year in either of these gowns. I love the unique look of the prints, could you see yourself throwing the bouquet in a bold print?

Both Anne Barge (left) and Jenny Packham’s (right) gowns look soft to the touch and would make a fabulous beach wedding dress. I love how the sparkles just below the bust grab your attention and help to make the bottom of the dress flow smoothly. Pair the gown with cute flat sandals and a sun tan and you’ll be ready to say “I do”.

Tulle is a style that you either love or love to hate and on Amsale (left) and Vera Wang’s (right) gowns I love to love it! The satin bodice with the tulle skirt on Amsale’s A-line reminds me of a dress a princess would be proud to wear and all she needs now are her glass slippers! Vera Wang always amazes me with her stunning details like the tulle on this gown that flows on top of a pink skirt and crystal beadwork that beautifully lines the bust. Everyone will definitely be asking who you’re wearing as you walk down the aisle in Amsale or Wang’s dresses.

Graphic Sugar Appliques
Move over, big sugar flowers -- the latest in wedding cake add-ons isn't your typical garden variety. More abstract sugar-made designs that seem to burst from the cake are the new way to show off your personality. A few pretty appliqué ideas we love: paisley, ruffles, lace cutouts and starbursts.

How to Make It Yours: The fun part about this is that you can find inspiration anywhere, from your invitations to a favorite dress, throw pillow or even pair of patterned shoes.

Chandelier Motifs
For the ultimate blend of sophistication and elegance, ask your baker to add "hanging" chandeliers from your wedding cake tiers. (Cake bakers work with edible, printable "paper and ink"to ensure a precise design.) The best part is that these chandelier accents aren't just for formal weddings -- they can look fresh and fun for a more casual wedding cake too.

How to Make It Yours: If you're having a laid-back wedding, choose a color combo like white frosting with light pink- or yellow-tinted ink chandeliers crowned with a lovebird cake topper. For a more formal wedding, have the chandeliers look smaller around the top tiers by using navy ink; get a more modern version with a black-and-white combo on square tiers.

Creative "Stamped" Patterns
For a unique, one-dimensional look, ask your baker to "stamp"a fun pattern onto your cake using a paintbrush or edible dye and a stamp (yep, you read that right). The bold result is decidedly different. Note: Don't go overboard -- you'll want to limit the designs to just a few tiers to keep it from looking too busy.

How to Make It Yours: For a traditional cake, go for a single custom monogram "stamp" in the corner of the bottom tier. Get creative with bands of plaid- or even houndstooth-patterned fondant, or have your cake baker use a one-of-a-kind design to go with other wedding day elements, like your invites and programs.

Fabric-Inspired Texture
Skip the typical allover buttercream swirls -- the new way of texturizing a wedding cake with fabric-like elements, like all-over white fondant designed to look like eyelet or crocheted lace. You could even take inspiration from your dress. Ask your baker to frost delicate lace-like accents along the tiers or to add a sugar-made "ruffle" to the bottom tier for a flirty finish.

How to Make It Yours: This trend is all about the texture, so limit the add-ons. Top your cake with a small cluster of fresh flowers in your color combo or just leave the top of the cake free of embellishment. Pick a coordinating cake stand and table overlay to finish the look.

Retro Accents and Colors
Retro is all the rage, and your cake is a great place to interpret the trend. Go for black-and-white, or even a mint green–frosted cake, softened with a small, black bow on the bottom tier, would make for a funky '50s look. Or, get a classic Grace Kelly–inspired style by asking for a white cake banded with champagne ribbon and accented with a sparkly silver brooch. In the same way, throw back to the 1920s with pink and gold-toned frosting and flapper-esque accents, like edible beads and sugar-painted feathers.

How to Make It Yours: Surround your retro cake with in-the-family artifacts, like a serving set, champagne glasses, milk-glass cake stands and lace table runners. Fill out the rest of the table with antique-framed family photos.

Cake Buffets
There's no rule that says you can only have one cake: Order a trio of coordinating cakes for your cake table. To get the look, come up with a design, motif or color combo (from your invites, perhaps) and ask your baker to vary the design from cake to cake. It's an eye-catching alternative to the classic, standalone version.

How to Make It Yours: The key is to dress up the cake table. An ultra-sleek table and cake stands work for a modern wedding, while gold cake stands and a couple of fresh flower arrangements complement an elegant affair.

Middle Tier Treatments
Don't just douse the top of your cake with flowers or use one of those silver cookie-cutter monogram toppers and call it a day -- consider moving the typical cake topper decorations to the middle cake tier for an entirely new look.

How to Make It Yours: Clustered red roses -- sugar-made or fresh -- arranged on the middle tier of a white wedding cake would have quite an effect. For a softer look, have your cake baker dress up the middle tier with vine-like, sugar-made flowers, reminiscent of a romantic garden. If it's a more modern style you're after, order a simple, white cake and have your baker add bright sugar flowers (like yellow anemones or pink peonies) that pop on the middle tier.

You want your wedding to look different. Here are simple ideas to give your celebration a personal touch.

Black Accents Are Back

We’re talking little black lacquer flower vases, black pillows in the lounge area, black glassware. To keep it from looking too dark, choose a deep jewel tone like deep blue, purple, or even red. It'll give your reception that timelessly chic, formal, time-for-cocktails-and-fun feel.

Props as Centerpieces

Re-think the term, reception centerpiece and incorporate decorative accessories (like the kind you would use to spruce up a coffee table, kitchen shelf, or fireplace mantle) into your centerpieces. Sparkly spheres, brilliant mercury glass pieces, or even a retro scale topped with fruit and flowers like this one can become the focal point of your tables.

Photo: Tanja Lippert Photography

Fabric Wrapped Vases

Forget about stressing over roses versus lilies and put the focus on your vases by wrapping them in eye-catching fabrics to give them a textured look and feel. To keep he look clean (not messy), choose flowers in the same colour like this all-white table here.

Great Gatsby Garden Decor

Button up a backyard or garden wedding with silver mint julep vases; pretty white garden urns and pedestals, and plenty of silver cocktail hour trays. Small flower arrangements on crisp cocktail tables will set the scene for an event Jay Gatsby would be proud of.

An Eclectic Mix of Monochromatic Vases

Like the mix and matched, wildflower, outdoor wedding aesthetic? Choose a monochromatic mix of flowers in all different shapes and sizes for your tables filled with colourful flowers for a more streamlined pulled-together look.

White Bouquets with Attention-Grabbing Wraps

Let your bouquet wrap shine by choosing all-white flowers. Then personalize it by asking your florist to wrap the stems with beads, sequins, pretty pins, shells, crocheted lace, or even twine are just a few ideas.

Pink & Brown

A sweet mix of pink and browns are pleasing to the eye. Consider short flower arrangements to keep the focus on the colour theme.

Lollipop wedding

Who says weddings have to be mellow? We love bright colours which brings out the positive vibes in people.

Black and gold

Ok so you prefer something dramatic, black and gold will not go wrong when you have bright flowers to bring cheer to the table. Consider fairy lights to create a dark night sky effect.

Sea-breeze weddings

Blue and white weddings

Blue and white weddings create a very laid back atmosphere. To avoid a bare feeling, have big bouquets of flowers as centrepieces.

Under the Sea wedding

Can't get enough of the sea? Create a unique centrepiece using seashells and painted dry twigs (corals are meant to stay in the sea!).

Green & white

For a natural high tea wedding, opt for light colours such as light green and white. Have fruits adorn the table for that in the backyard feel.
