Fun Circus-Themed Event Ideas

The Starlight Children's Foundation hosted its Starlight Gala, sponsored by Toys "R" Us, at Toronto's Fairmont Royal York Hotel on April 6. With the goal of raising money for sick or injured children, organizers created a whimsical bash filled with circus-inspired ideas. From flowers in a popcorn container vase to carnival games and a Ferris wheel filled with cupcakes, here's a look at how the foundation breathed vibrant life into a popular theme—which, incidentally, is perfectly suited to summertime functions, including corporate parties, picnics, and more.

Masculine Ideas for Guy-Focused Events

Colin Cowie returned to produce Cash Money Records' annual pre-Grammy awards party this year. The event had a vintage Las Vegas theme—think Rat Pack mixed with Crazy Horse. At the entrance to the soundstage at the Lot in West Hollywood was a vintage 1951 Cadillac convertible. Throughout the space inside were palm trees and a section of cabanas.

A masculine, residential-style look was among the reoccurring design styles seen at award show after-parties in Los Angeles this season. Spotted were details like deep-buttoned leather sofas, potted palms, and muted color tones of chocolate, copper, and gold. AMC’s Golden Globes party (pictured), held in the Stardust Room at the Beverly Hilton, included a sleek, upscale environment meant to feel like a retro-style club. In October, the BizBash IdeaFest New York took to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, where a wall of potted succulents at the Zak Events booth offered a clever way to display escort cards at events. Plus, they served as takeaway gifts. Succulents create a more masculine—call it unisex—look than flowers.

After designing a romantic red look for the tribute to Pedro Almodóvar last year, the Museum of Modern Art opted for a more masculine design at its film benefit honoring Quentin Tarantino in December. The event's sleek look was matched by clear chargers and ghost chairs; clusters of pillar candles replaced flowers as centerpieces.

Under Armour, a sponsor of the N.F.L. Scouting Combine for prospective players, invited fans to test themselves in the same drills at the Super Bowl N.F.L. Experience this year. Fans who ran the 40-yard "Run to Daylight" dash were timed, with the fastest daily participant awarded prizes. Participants wore R.F.I.D. bracelets to sign up for the activities, which allowed them to share their times on social media networks as well as enter a drawing for two tickets to the big game.

Balloon Decor In Its Most Creative Forms

Designer Adrian Wu filled the Studio at World MasterCard Fashion Week with playful balloon trees. Models walked the runway—a path of green Astroturf—wearing theatrical dresses and masks from the movie V for Vendetta.

The American Folk Art Museum's Katie Hush and Matt Beaugrand used balloons to add some dimension and texture to the otherwise stark facade of Metropolitan Pavilion, which hosted the museum's benefit. Rows of large, stationary white balloons, attached to rigid ribbons and weighted down by silver stars, lined the red carpet.

Sunway University used a balloon arch with their corporate colours to create a more relaxed feel for their Career Network Tea.
