"Not only is all of our decor rented, which is pretty simple for everyone to do, but a lot of the pieces this year were made from reclaimed wood," said Fox Creative Services' Karin Pofsky. "It's about extending the life of decor or elements to be turned into something different in our events."

Pofsky opted for the Bungalow in Santa Monica because she liked the space's green capabilities. "Their restaurant and their chef are known for their locally grown sustainable menu, so it was an easy choice for us—that and the outdoor location and proximity to studio and the press," she said. "The Fairmont also does a good job as well with their ecosystems and processes with recycling and so forth. They have some eco-friendly wines and things like that, so they seem to be taking the extra step."

"No synthetic chemicals were used in the fertilizers, the organic waste is composted and decomposed," said Brian Worley, co-owner of YourBash. "Runoff is used to fertilize the plants and horse, cow, and goat waste are used to create natural fertilizer."

1. CHRISTIAN B. PALENCIA

Christian B. Palencia (who performs shoeless as he has a special audio recording and playback device being controlled by his feet while he played the guitar),  is a solo singer/songwriter who dreams of inspiring people through music by giving hope to push on and to realize that ‘Today is that better day’. He is very well known to keep the intimacy no matter how big the crowd.

2. COMEDIANS KAVIN JAY AND ROSS STEPHENSON

Kavin has been voted the grumpiest comedian in Malaysia today for his love/hate relationship with his life, love and country. Born with a severe disability (being indian) he was always destined to be angry and easily irritated, putting that negative energy on the stage to positive effects. He complains about everything, so that you don't have to. Known in the underground scenes and open mike spots, he has since performed with international acts such as Dave Callan (Ire), Pierre Hollins (UK), Vir Das (IND) JJ Whitehead (Can), Chris Wainhouse (Aus), Rob Brown (AUS), Paul Ogata (US) and Steven Grant (UK) and countless Malaysian stand up comics

Ross Stephenson is a funny man who uses a combination of psychology knowhow and Malaysian wit to make your day.

3 RAY CHEONG

Ray Cheong, Malaysia’s Jazz, Folk, Blues, Rock and Soul Singer-Songwriter/Guitarist performed next. Ray's segment consisted of his own compositions such as Afraid, Just a While, Yellow Day. He is one of the most prominent guitar players in Malaysia with his unique way of approaching the acoustic guitar with a new-age genre of slapping and tapping techniques similar to the likes of Justin King, Don Ross, Andy McKee and other new-age guitarist in the music world.

4. FAZZ
Another noteworthy 4-piece band is Fazz. They are simply amazing and their energy so electrifying. Their music is a mix of broadway, swing, jazz, a bit of rock and lots of drama. The four musicians – Kevin (Vocal), Grace (Keys), Farouque (D.Bass) and Jone (Drums), work together to bring entertainment on stage using the date of 1940s concept as their genre.

5 ROZZ With a classical blues tone to her voice and a timeless style, Rozz is ad infinitum the best thing to hit the local underground jazz music scene. Her flamboyant theatrical persona adds up to her mesmerizing and moving performance and together with her playfulness and joyful interaction with audience, she is incontrovertibly an astonishing performer in her own league.

Beacons are taking the world of mobile by storm. They are low-powered radio transmitters that can send signals to smartphones that enter their immediate vicinity, via Bluetooth Low Energy technology.  In the months and years to come, we’ll see beaconing applied in all kinds of valuable ways.

For marketers in particular, beacons are important because they allow more precise targeting of customers in a locale. A customer approaching a jewelry counter in a department store, for example, can receive a message from a battery-powered beacon installed there, offering information or a promotion that relates specifically to merchandise displayed there. In a different department of the same store, another beacon transmits a different message. Before beacons, marketers could use geofencing technology, so that a message, advertisement, or coupon could be sent to consumers when they were within a certain range of a geofenced area, such as within a one-block radius of a store. However, that technology typically relies on GPS tracking, which only works well outside the store. With beaconing, marketers can lead and direct customers to specific areas and products within a store or mall.

Is your conference bag a repository for notebooks and sponsor flyers? Or it is a planet-saving, social good-providing super hero?

Up-cycled conference bags have become an increasing trend in the meetings industry. Keep your event banners, hand them over to a social enterprise to repurpose into a bag, and then give or resell them as branded items to customers or attendees. I recently came across Common Thread, one group that is harnessing the desire of event planners to do good, reduce waste and provide conference bags that are more than just a container for exhibitor materials. Melanie Conn took some time to share the story of their program, the difference it makes and some tips for event professionals looking to up-cycle banners to bags.

Paperless events are happening naturally as technology use at events expands. In the meantime food waste, emissions and unfair labor concerns mount. We need to turn our eyes to these and other major challenges that present our biggest opportunities and risks.

2. Event sustainability is a management skill. Not just a marketing skill
Engaging stakeholders, reducing inefficiency, enhancing experiences, improving satisfaction and reducing risk: these are strategic benefits event sustainability strategies can bring to your event in addition to providing public relations opportunities.

Consider these ideas to make your food and beverage service more sustainable—and save money.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more food reaches landfills than any other type of municipal solid waste. The Food Waste Reduction Alliance estimates that as much as 40 percent of the food that is grown, processed, and transported in the United States will never be consumed, yet an estimated 50 million Americans do not have access to enough food. There are also environmental impacts to food waste: decomposing food in landfills releases methane, a greenhouse gas. And, according to the alliance, uneaten food in this country uses 26 percent of our freshwater resources and accounts for 4 percent of total oil consumption.
