I'm lucky to have parents who believe in me. When I left the rat race to start Best Events, they didn't even show a hint of worry which gave me the confidence boost I needed. When I was growing up, my mum was the strict one while my dad was the one I loved hanging out with. They were both career people but my mum's job demanded more of her. My dad who worked in an ad agency as a creative director managed to spend most of his weekends with me.

He used to take me to my music classes, dance classes and friend's parties and basically was my only mode of transport till I was 17. Our favourite things to do together were to rent books, videos and watch TV while eating all sorts of junk food. He's really hip and enjoys most of the movies and shows I enjoy. We share a passion for the more artsy films eg Big Fish and funny sitcoms eg Friends. He enjoys the latest music and is always updated on the latest trends. He's quite a dancer too!

As age catches up on him, he spends less time reading (he loves reading about the supernatural and non-fiction books) and watching TV due to a degenerative eye condition. He keeps fit jogging most evenings around his neighbourhood.

I'm guilty about not being able to spend more time with my parents since getting married. Our time together is mostly to talk about the latest happenings and catching up on our lives during our weekly lunch sessions. I realized recently how little I knew about my dad's background so I've started my dad on a new project- writing about his life. He protested and said that he wasn't a hero and who would want to read about him anyway. I told him I did and that's all that mattered. He is MY hero. He provided me with an education ( most of his pay went to paying the bills and putting me through school), showered me with love, brought our family out for short trips, brought me to parks and is always there for me. What more can a girl ask for?

It's time I got to know my dad's life, how he encountered the Japanese soldiers during World War 2 to his move from Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur to how he met my mum. We tend to take our parents for granted while everything revolves around our world. We tell them how our day went but seldom ask how theirs was.

So I hope he starts writing real soon. He's started a draft with my persistence and has even done some drawings. I look forward to reading about my dad's life no matter how ordinary he thinks it is. Papa, I know you know this but I want to say it again anyway- I love you! Happy Father's Day!

For our readers, our following post is about the many ways you can spend time with your dad (and mum!)

Getaways are great for the soul but when you don't have the time to travel, a relaxing spa comes close enough. We speak to Jane from Ravissante, a spa for women, about her new heavenly spa.

How did Ravissante come about and what does the name mean?

The name Ravissante (pronounced as rah-viss-sant) means Ravishingly Beautiful, in French. It is aptly chosen because of our belief that every woman is ravishingly beautiful and it is our aim to make women beautiful, both inside and out.

What makes Ravissante different from the rest of the spas around?

Ravissante caters exclusively for women. It is a place where they can feel at home, in a very relaxing atmosphere where all our clients are our friends. We also have an extensive menu, catering from top-to-toe. There is something for everyone, whether you like to relax (spa, facials, massage) or to look better (wrinkle treatments, slimming, eyelash extensions) we at Ravissante would like to ensure that you feel better too!

What's a typical day for you?

Would you believe I have a noisy cat as an alarm clock? She'd sit there and meow every 7am, sharp! I'd go to gym then head off to the spa. Mingle with the staff, then meet the clients, get online, and before you know it, it's 7pm! Then off from the spa to meet friends or family for dinner and drinks. Lastly, my boyfriend would rock-a-by-bb me to sleep ever night!
He's a gem :)

What's the one thing you would like to change from your past?

Hmm... at this point, nothing. I believe that we are who we are because of our past. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger; as long as you learn the lesson and keep move forward!

Whats the favorite part about your job ?

My favourite part of the job is when I see results from my client's treatments. A little change in their skin like smaller pores from facials, lesser pigments or glowing radiant skin after treatment; and the smile on the client's face... its like instant gratification!

What books help you fall asleep?

Haha.. funny that you'd ask! Would you believe its celebrity gossip magazines like HOT!

If a newspaper were to feature you, what would the headline say?

Gee, I dont know! Hopefully something like "The Art of Being Beautiful"

If you were a dessert, which would you be?

A low fat mint chocolate sundae with strawberries! Definitely something to indulge in!

If you weren't a spa owner, what would you be?

I would be in corporate, heading some business unit in a multinational company!

If you could beam one message into space, what would it be?

Love yourself and be pampered at Ravissante!

I had the opportunity to work on a big scale project recently thanks to Tangerine Advertising. They requested that we supply entertainers and game stalls for the LKSA Carnival held on 15 May 2010. Planning started 3 months before the event and it only got more exciting as the day got closer.

What made this carnival so unique was that it was to be held on a totally new highway in Shah Alam. Construction was still going as we went there for our set up the day before the event. Trucks were still going in and out of the area as they rushed to complete as much of the highway as possible before the 18 May 2010 deadline (the official opening of the Sri Muda and Alam Impian Toll Plazas)

As some suppliers came later than the stipulated time, they had to work in the dark as some of the highway lamp posts were not functioning yet. (Pix below: The incomplete highway littered with pebbles, a vehicle used to sweep away the debris and a worker laying out the Soccer court lit only by car headlights)
I can safely say that the highway looked decent enough the next day when we arrived. Canopies were filled with game & food stalls and areas for feet massages, face painting, sand art and digital games. There was a petting zoo, Drift Showcase, Didgeridoo and Fire Performance and appearances by local artists to entertain the crowd. People were seen happily playing at game stalls and eating free candy floss. All activities offered were free except for a special photography booth. Food and drink were sold at reasonable prices and items included nasi briyani to sliced guava.

The only visible hiccup was the lack of directions to the venue. The only indications that there was a carnival held there were the buntings on lamp posts leading to the area. The Plaza Tol Sri Muda signage was absent despite the map showing that that was the road to take. The entrance which we were supposed to use was closed and the Alam Impian route seemed to be the only other alternative though people couldn't be sure as there was no one around to give them proper directions. Some guides gave conflicting directions causing more confusion.

Despite that, the crowd started growing after 10am and we estimate that about 3,000 people turned up. Planet Football successfully recruited 160 teams to play in their "3 on 3" soccer challenge which ended at 10.30pm that night as many teams arrived late. Cash prizes of about RM10,000 was given out to winning teams in various categories.

Some of us take our mums & wives for granted (and I'm as guilty as some of you are!) and some go to great lengths to show how much they appreciate them. We had a Mother's Day contest in this month's issue of Simply Partylicious (under the Promotion page) and 10 lucky winners won their mums or wives a free lunch at Dish Deli (sponsored by Dish Deli)!

The mums/wives enjoyed Dish Deli's delicious (try saying this fast!) Weekend Roast Menu of either Roast Beef with Yorkshire Pudding, Roast Lamb or Roast Chicken and finished their meal with a Peach & Almond Crumble served with Ice Cream and Ice Lemon Tea.

They each also walked home with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from Eeva Florist, yummy cupcakes from Truly Scrumptious and a Traditional Bamboo Cupping voucher worth RM148 from Ravissante Beauty Shop.

Curious about the sponsors? Read about them in our Fabulous Finds and In The Spolight sections. One of the winners, Cynthia, wrote about her experience as well. Check her blog out at http://cynselfblog.blogspot.com/2010/05/mothers-day-lunch.html

Spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting florists whether it be for a birthday, an anniversary, a wedding or to show how sorry you are, you'll know for sure you've made the right choice when your florist has done work for royalty. Here's an interview with Diyah from Eeva Flower Shoppe.

How did Eeva come about and what does the name mean?
Eeva was established since 1982. The name was given by the shop's first owner, my mum's eldest sister. It's the name of my cousin who was left to my mother's care for about a year after the tragic death of her father (my mum's brother - Ramli Malek)

What makes Eeva different from the rest of the florists around?
We create different kinds of floral arrangements suitable for hotels, palaces, functions, stage decoration and landscaping.

What's the most romantic client request ever done?
One Valentine's day, there was a client who asked my mum to arrange 300 stalks of red roses into a shape of a heart to send to his wife.

Whats the favorite part about your job ?
Meeting so many kinds of people from CEO's, to Ministers, to Royalties and the regular folk. Also we've been able to go to the places that other people have no access to!

What books help you fall asleep?
Science fiction

If a newspaper were to feature you, what would the headline say?
"A small stall with a big range of flower arrangements"

If you were a biscuit, which would you be?
Cream crackers

If you weren't a florist, what would you be?
A restaurant Owner

If you could beam one message into space, what would it be?
Stop the war and save the world!

Any girl growing up has to at least pass a brief phase where she pretended to be a princess. Have you had daughters smearing your makeup all over their faces and trying to walk in your high heel shoes? It's quite a sight to behold and though we may not encourage them to wear makeup at such a young age, it can be quite a treat to allow them to do so during their birthday parties.
